6 Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season - 12/01/2017

BAY CITY, Mich. – December is a festive month for spending time with family and showing them how much they mean to you. But giving gifts to loved ones isn't the only way to make an impact this time of year. You can donate or volunteer to help those in need and make the season bright for everyone in your local community! So, if you're looking for ways to give back this holiday season read on to learn six ideas on how to do so.

6 Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season

    1. Donate to a food drive/bank: Food banks need our support year-round, but their resources are stretched especially thin through the holiday season due to demand. The best way to donate is through a monetary gift, however, as most food banks have partnerships with local grocery stores where they can get more food for a dollar than average shoppers. Find your local food bank to donate to on Feeding America's website.

    2. Donate winter coats, hats, and gloves: The cold winter weather we experience in Michigan can chill you to the bone. Help keep up local children and adults in need from being cold at home, school, or work this year by donating your gently-used winter coats, hats, and gloves to Just For Kids or the Salvation Army.

    3. Adopt a family: Help make the holiday season one to remember for a family in need in your local area. You can adopt a family through Volunteers of America to provide direct support, such as food, toys, and clothing.

    4. Donate toys: Make a child's Christmas extra special this year by making sure they receive a toy under the tree. You can donate new toys or gently used toys to local children's hospitals or Toys for Tots.

    5. Volunteer at an animal shelter: Dogs, cats, and other animals can use some love and attention during the holiday season as well. Find a local animal shelter or humane society to volunteer at this December.

    6. Use Amazon Smile: Are you an avid Amazon shopper? Instead of using the regular "amazon.com" URL, register your account through "smile.amazon.com". It's the same Amazon you use, except 0.5% of your eligible purchases will be donated to the charity of your choice.

Make it a great holiday season for those in need this year with any of these 6 ways to give back. At Graff Chevrolet Bay City, giving back is extremely important to us and a core tenant of our business. Learn about the many causes and organizations we donate and help raise money for on our Community Involvement page. Also, before you do any holiday traveling this month, make sure your vehicle is running in top shape by scheduling an appointment at the Graff Chevrolet Bay City Service Center.

    15 Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters - 10/24/2017

BAY CITY, Mich. – Halloween is one of the most exciting and fun times of the year, but it can also be very dangerous for trick-or-treaters. The National Safety Council estimates that children are twice as likely to be involved in vehicle accidents on Halloween than any other day of the year. However, with proper planning and precautionary measures, you and your little monsters can enjoy a worry-free holiday. Follow these 15 Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters to maximize your candy count while keeping you and your family safe while you take to the streets.

15 Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

    1. Accompany Your Trick-or-Treaters: Going along with your kids as they trick-or-treat will allow you to monitor them. Responsible adults should always accompany their younger children.
    2. Plan Your Route in Advance: Walking from street to street can take a lot out of you. Mapping out your path before you go will help you avoid sore legs or getting lost.
    3. Agree on a Return Time: Usually, neighborhoods will have a curfew or time to let you know when it is time to head home, but you should still plan on a time to return home. You don't want to be out all night!
    4. Avoid Wearing Masks: Masks can obstruct your child's vision and, in some instances, can make it difficult to breathe. If you can, use non-toxic makeup to complete their costume!
    5. Wear Comfy Shoes: Since you'll probably be walking from street to street, you'll want to make sure that you and your children are in comfortable shoes. Double knot your laces to avoid tripping!
    6. Use Reflective Tape: Reflective tape will allow drivers on the road to better see your child as they navigate the streets at night. Use it on their costume or candy bag to help make them more visible. If possible, bring along a flashlight as well!
    7. Put the Phone Down: Keep electronic usage to a minimum while you're out and about, if possible. You never know when your child might dart out into the road, and it's better to be paying attention if it occurs!
    8. Walk on the Sidewalk: Teach your kids to walk on the sidewalk or as far away from driving vehicles as possible. If there aren't any sidewalks for you and your children to stay on, walk facing traffic as far to the left as you can.
    9. Use Crosswalks and Traffic Signals: Paying attention and remaining responsible with street rules will maximize your safety while you're trick-or-treating. You should only cross the street when you're given the signal to go.
    10. Stay in a Group: If you're trick-or-treating with friends or family, you'll be more noticeable to vehicles on the road. Traveling in groups increases your safety while you're out and about.
    11. Charge Your Phone: This might seem like a no-brainer, but in the event of an emergency, a charged phone can make all the difference.
    12. Watch Out for Parked Cars: You never know when a car might try to back out of their parking spot. Make sure your child knows to double check before they walk by a parked car!
    13. Don't Buy Oversized Costumes: Costumes that are too long on your child can drag and can be extremely dangerous at night. If it's too long, hem it to avoid tripping!
    14. Keep Your Lights On: After you leave your home, lock your doors and keep your lights and TV on so that it appears that there's someone in your home on Halloween night. That way, nobody will try breaking in while you're gone.
    15. If You See Something, Say Something: If you notice anything suspicious occurring, contact the authorities right away. It's better to be safe than sorry!

15 Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters

On a busy holiday like Halloween, keeping your children safe should be your number one priority. Use these 15 Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treaters to teach your little ghouls and goblins important habits to prevent any Halloween nightmares from occurring. At Graff Bay City, we know that safety behind the wheel is just as important as it is on foot. If you're planning on trick-or-treating out of town this year, you can make the road a much safer place with Chevrolet's advanced safety features. Another way to increase your safety on the road is by keeping up with your Fall Car Care. Important components in your vehicle can be affected by the changing weather, and our Fall Car Care can teach you how to spot damage to your vehicle's components and what you can do to prevent damage from occurring. BAY CITY, Mich.,–– At the Texas State Fair, the new medium-duty Silverado trucks were recently announced. These powerful Class 4 and 5 trucks, which will be launched in late 2018, will be known as the Chevrolet Silverado 4500 and 5500, respectively. The new 2018 Silverado 4500 and 5500 pickups are built to tow and haul with confidence, able to carry as much as a box truck or a city delivery truck! While the 4500 and 5500 aren't available yet, you'll be able to drive one of these bold and exclusive medium-duty pickups near the end of next year. Read on to discover the 2018 Silverado's strikingly impressive new features below.

    New Medium-Duty Silverado Trucks Announced

The Silverado 4500 and 5500 will come in Regular and Crew Cab models. Owners of the new Silverado are able to choose between 4x2 and 4x4 capabilities as well as a wide variety of GVWRs (Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings) and wheelbases. These trucks will also come equipped with optional OnStar and 4G LTE connectivity to allow you and your crew to stay safe and improve your productivity while on the road. These technologies, combined with the capabilities of the new Silverado models, will also improve the efficiency of fleet drivers around the world.

The 4500 and 5500 models will be powered by Duramax diesel engines and Allison transmissions, a timeless combination that has provided power to over two million trucks. Since 2001, Chevrolet and GMC trucks have used Duramax engines, accumulating over 100 billion miles of real-world experience. In the 1950s, Allison Transmission, the largest designer and developer of medium and heavy-duty transmission, has provided Chevrolet's trucks with powerful and hard-working technology that's allowed these impressive vehicles to stand out against the competition.

“The first Chevy truck was built in 1918 for small business owners, and we have been expanding the market ever since because customers want specialized trucks that can tow and haul with confidence,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Marketing and Advertising for Chevrolet Trucks.

“We are earning new business because we have more solutions to help businesses grow,” Schwegman said. “The Silverado 4500 and 5500 will stand out because we’ve designed the trucks around how customers work. They will be powerful, highly maneuverable, and among the easiest trucks on the market to upfit with specialized bodies, such as dump bodies, rollbacks, freight boxes and more.”

How to Change Your Vehicle's Tires - 09/26/2017

BAY CITY, Mich. – According to a study conducted by NBC News, almost 60% of Americans don't know how to change their vehicle's tires. Instead, many rely on roadside assistance for a quick and easy solution in the event of a flat tire. Knowing how to change your vehicle's tires is a necessary skill that all drivers should be able to do. While it is easy to rely on roadside assistance for help, there's always a chance that you may get a flat tire in an area with no cell phone reception, leaving you on your own. Luckily, changing your vehicle's tire is a quick and easy process to learn. Follow these guidelines if you wind up with a flat tire while you're out on the road.

What You'll Need to Fix a Flat

How to Change Your Vehicle's Tires

    • Spare Tire
    • Lug Wrench
    • Jack
    • Vehicle Owner's Manual

In order to change a tire, you'll need all of these items to safely and effectively replace your flat. All of the items listed should come with your vehicle and, besides your vehicle owner's manual, are typically located in your trunk. If you can't find these items, or if your car didn't come with any of the items listed above, you should purchase new ones right away.

How to Change a Flat Tire

How to Change Your Vehicle's Tires

    1. Find a Safe Place to Park: If you notice you have a flat tire, slowly reduce your speed and look for a safe and level place to park. Turn on your hazard lights, pull over into the safe area away from traffic, and apply your parking brake.
    2. Remove Your Hubcap: If your vehicle has hubcaps that cover the lug nuts on the wheel, you'll want to get it removed before you can get to work on your tire. Use the flat end of your lug wrench (the "L"-shaped tool in your tire changing kit) to pry your hubcap off. If you aren't sure how to remove your hubcap, consult your vehicle owner's manual.
    3. Loosen the Lug Nuts: Using the other end of the lug wrench, unscrew the lug nuts on your vehicle's tire (there should be six of them) until they're loose. Do not completely remove the lug nuts just yet though. Also, if you're having trouble loosening the lug nuts, use your foot or the weight of your body against the lug wrench if you need to.
    4. Position Your Jack Under Your Vehicle: Look under your car for a clear area of exposed metal or a groove in your vehicle's frame near the flat tire where you can place your jack. If you aren't sure where to look, consult your vehicle owner's manual to find the specific location to place your tire jack.
    5. Raise Your Vehicle With the Jack: Carefully crank the lever on your vehicle's jack to raise your vehicle until it's at least six inches above the ground. While your vehicle is raised, it is extremely important to make sure you don't put any part of your body underneath it.
    6. Unscrew the Lug Nuts: Now that your vehicle is raised, it's time to finish unscrewing your lug nuts. You should be able to do it by hand after loosening them up in step 3. Once removed, keep the lug nuts in a nearby location so you can have them on hand when you put the new tire on.
    7. Remove Your Flat Tire: Grab your tire by the treads and carefully remove it until it's free from your vehicle. Make sure to lay it flat so it doesn't roll away.
    8. Mount Your Spare Tire: Now, take your spare tire and line up the lug nut holes in the rim so that they align with the lug bolts (the metal bolts where you removed the lug nuts). Gently push your spare tire in until the lug bolts are visible through the rim of your tire.
    9. Tighten the Lug Nuts: Put your lug nuts back on the lug bolts and tighten them by hand. Tighten them as much as you can.
    10. Lower Your Vehicle: Slowly and carefully lower your vehicle on the jack so that it's on a level plane again. After this, you'll want to tighten the lug nuts one more time with your lug wrench for good measure.
    11. Replace Your Hubcap: Your hubcap should fit in perfectly back on your spare but if it doesn't, keep it with your flat tire after you put everything away.
    12. Put Away Your Equipment: Put your flat tire, lug wrench, and jack in your vehicle's trunk. Double check that you have everything and pat yourself on the back! You've changed your flat tire!
